A soon-to-be marine reserve that is popular with locals for the variety of corals and marine life.  Chances are you will find sand dollars, encounter eels, octopus, trumpet fish, and other assorted marine creatures.

A guided tour of Martinique’s famous distillery, regarded by many as producing the world’s finest white rum.  Judge for yourself, as the tour concludes with a visit to their tasting room.

Le Carbet Beach 12:00-2:30
Coconut palms line this long and picturesque stretch of sand, where you can search for starfish in the crystalline waters, explore a variety of bars and restaurants, barbecue on the beach, or simply take in the sea and sand on the most Caribbean of beaches.

Northern Martinique Itinerary #2:

St. Pierre

Fort-de-France to St. Pierre 9:00-10:00

Visit the former capital of Martinique.  Before being decimated by the 1902 eruption of Mont Pelée, St. Pierre was known as Little Paris of the West Indies. The town still retains a mystique that pulses from the cobblestone streets and stone walls of the original city.  See the ruins of the 18th century theater that once served as the cultural and political heart of the island, as well as the the prison cell that protected one of the only survivors of the 1902 eruption.  You can also visit the open-air market, ruins of the St. Pierre fortifications, and the downtown strip of shops and restaurants.

Northern Martinique Itinerary #3:  

Mont Pelée

Fort-de-France to Mont Pelée 9:00-10:00

Hike Mont Pelée 10:00-1:00
After a stop at the best French bakery in northern Martinique to load up on hiking snacks, you will ascend the southern slope of Mont Pelée.  The challenging hike will reward you, during intermittent breaks in the ever-present clouds, with simultaneous views of the Caribbean and the Atlantic.  Although at times the hike is very steep, the path is well-maintained, and any reasonably fit person can reach the volcano’s caldera within an hour and a half.  This is one of the most majestic treks a hiker will ever experience.

French Charcuterie Lunch 1:00-1:45
Lunch consists of various French meats and cheeses served with traditional French baguette and will be served at the scenic overlook located at the trail head.

Southern Martinique Itinerary #1: 

Les Salines

Fort-de-France to Les Salines 9:00-10:15

Les Salines 10:15-2:00
Widely touted as Martinique’s most beautiful beach.  Nestle under a copse of coconut palms to admire the sugar white sands and crystal clear water.  As you alternate between walks along the beach, naps in the shade, and swims in the tranquil water, make sure you don’t miss the famous coconut ice cream sold from bell-ringing vendors.

Options: (no additional cost, you’re just trading beach time for additional adventures)

Hike to Petrified Savannah (12:30-2:00)
If you wish to supplement your beach lounging with a little hiking, a bumpy drive to the Petrified Savannah will transport you from the Caribbean to a Mars-like atmosphere.  Although collectors have removed the petrified forest that gives the area its name, the vistas are worth a trip.

Tour of Trois Rivières Rhum Distillery (9:30-10:15), Les Salines (11:00-2:00)

Sea Turtle Beaches

Fort-de-France to Anse Noire 9:00-10:00

Anse Noire & Anse Dufour 10:00-12:45
These beaches are famous for the numerous sea turtles that frequent the sea grass beds. The water is usually crystal clear, and even if you aren’t able to spot a turtle, snorkelers will not be disappointed with the diverse array of marine life and intriguing rock formations.  Both beaches require a bit of a hike from the parking lot, but the picturesque stretches of sand make for an excellent combination of beach relaxation and salt water adventure.

Anse d’Arlet 1:00-2:15
An iconic church steeple rising above the white sand makes this picturesque beach one of the most photographed areas of Martinique. Snack stands and restaurants line the sand, and an outcropping of rocks lying just off shore, which attracts a variety of tropical fish, makes interesting snorkeling for beginners.

Trois-Îlets

Fort-de-France to Trois-Îlets 9:00-9:45

Pottery Village 9:45-10:45
At the end of a red clay road sits this little artisan community where local potters turn the earth into works of art.  There is a wide variety of items available for purchase, from inexpensive souvenirs to luxury décor; even those who don’t particularly enjoy shopping will find themselves enamored by the colorful setting.

Anse d’Arlet 11:15-1:15

Option:  Le Diamant “Diamond Rock” 12:30-1:15

Less developed and with fewer people than the other Trois-Îlets beaches, at Plage Diamant you can play in the waves or stretch out under a palm tree on this expansive white-sand beach. Rising from the sea is the famous island which was commissioned as a British warship during the Napoleonic Wars.

Trois Rivières Distillery 1:45-2:30
Take in the sights as you drive along the Diamant coast toward one of Martinique’s most well-regarded distilleries where you can tour and taste.
